Chapter 62 Vasily?
Chapter 62 Vasily?
After spending several hours in the ordnance and military preparedness area, Lu Ye memorized the list of required equipment and their prices.
He glanced at the digital clock on the wall; it was 7:30 PM.
Since I don't have an official identification badge yet, I should try not to go out alone at night in this unfamiliar and chaotic camp.
Lu Ye turned around, preparing to walk towards the blast-proof staircase leading to the ground, and return to the main medical building to meet up with Yuri and the others.
Just as he was about to reach the top of the stairs, a group of people walked in through the front door.
Lu Ye subconsciously took half a step back into the shadows and stopped next to a stall selling tactical flashlights.
He casually picked up a high-powered flashlight, pretending to check the switch, but his eyes were fixed on the direction of the door, using the reflection from the glass counter of the stall.
Leading the way was a female officer in Russian military uniform.
He was tall and slender, with golden hair piled up under his military cap. He walked with great speed and had a stern face that exuded an air of authority.
Beside the female officer was a fat man wearing a camp administration uniform.
The fat man, slightly hunched over, kept wiping the cold sweat from his forehead as he walked, explaining something to the female officer in a humble tone, his posture extremely submissive, clearly indicating that he was at a disadvantage.
Lu Ye kept his head down, not wanting to attract anyone's attention in this place.
However, the moment he looked away, he saw an extremely familiar face.
Lu Ye's pupils suddenly contracted, and his right hand, gripping the flashlight, tightened sharply. Vasily?
The man wearing Russian military combat uniform, carrying weapons, and silently following behind the female officer was Vasily!
"How is that possible?" A wave of doubt washed over Lu Ye.
Didn't Colonel Igor say that Vasily was suspected of leaking secrets and had been taken away by the military police for questioning?
As for Lu Ye himself, he was suspected and was eventually abandoned by Colonel Igor.
In Lu Ye's subconscious, there were only two possible fates for those taken away by the military police: either they would be executed on the spot if they were confirmed to be spies, or they would be skinned alive in a dark and dreary interrogation room.
But now, Vasily is not only alive and well, but he is even walking openly in this heavily guarded mercenary camp behind a female officer of a very high rank!
Countless thoughts were swirling wildly in Lu Ye's mind.
Lu Ye took a deep breath and forcibly suppressed the urge to rush up and ask.
Lu Ye kept his head down, still playing with the flashlight, his body motionless.
The female officer and her entourage did not linger in the ordnance and defense area on the first floor.
They walked straight through the hall and headed towards the elevator at the end, guarded by four fully armed bodyguards.
Upon seeing the female officer's identification, the four guards immediately stood at attention, saluted, and allowed her to pass.
The elevator doors slowly closed, and Vasily's figure completely disappeared from Lu Ye's sight.
Lu Ye put down the tactical flashlight in his hand, turned around, and quickly walked up the stairs leading to the ground.
He can't get into the second basement level now, but he has to figure out what's going on.
Back at the hospital, Lu Ye pushed open the door to the observation ward on the second floor and went inside.
The five people in the ward were resting with their eyes closed when they heard the door open and turned around.
When the ward fell silent for a second when they saw Lu Ye change into a brand new black training uniform, even his tactical boots were different.
"Yo ho!" Roman, lying on the bed, was the first to whistle loudly, making a big joke.
"He changed his clothes, and I must say, he looks quite handsome!"
Artyom grinned, forcing a laugh despite the pain in his arm wound, and scolded, "You've been gone so long? Tell me honestly, did you go to the bar in the residential area? Did you go to that pink money pit behind the bar too?!"
Eugene chimed in from the side, "You're back so late? You've got some serious fighting power! Did you find a woman from Eastern Europe or Asia?"
A burst of knowing laughter erupted in the ward.
Lu Ye shook his head helplessly and quickly waved his hand to signal them to stop: "That's not true at all! I just went to the shops in the arms section, took a hot shower, and had a meal."
"Just had a meal? What a waste of precious time." Roman scoffed.
Yuri leaned against the headboard, reached for the water glass on the bedside table, took a sip, and looked at Lu Ye, asking, "Lu, what are your thoughts after touring the camp this afternoon?"
Lu Ye walked to his bed and sat down. Recalling what he had seen in the restaurant that afternoon, he answered truthfully, "It felt like everything cost money, and prices were very high."
Yuri nodded and put down his water glass. "You're right, the prices here are ridiculously high. But do you know why so many mercenaries, after making money, are still willing to come here?"
Lu Ye shook his head and looked at Yuri.
Yuri explained, "The Morozovsk camp was ostensibly built with joint funding from several large PMC companies, but in reality, the real boss behind it is a high-ranking official in the Russian military who wields significant power in the defense deployment of the Southern Theater."
Yuri pointed out the window: "With this military background, the things here are expensive, but absolutely genuine."
"More importantly, it's safe here."
"As long as you don't cause trouble or seek death, there will absolutely be no double-crossing in this camp. Anyone who dares to draw their gun and rob here will be shot dead on the spot by the camp's internal guards."
"Of course, outside the camp your life is in the hands of fate, but inside the camp, as long as you have money, you can get a good night's sleep. That's why we're willing to pay that 20% premium."
After listening, Lu Ye nodded thoughtfully. Here, money is the ticket to survival and rest.
-----------------
Early the next morning.
Although Yuri is still unable to engage in strenuous exercise, he can already walk with the help of crutches.
"Let's go, Lu." Yuri called to Lu Ye, "I'll take you to the command and administration area on the second basement level."
"The funeral procession set up an office there to issue official identification to approved temporary workers. Only after receiving the badge do you truly have a pass to this camp."
Lu Ye followed Yuri out of the hospital.
After passing through the first floor's ordnance and defense area, they took an elevator guarded by internal security personnel and continued downwards to the second basement level.
The moment the elevator doors opened, Lu Ye immediately sensed that the atmosphere here was completely different from that upstairs.
The hallway was carpeted, and the air filtration system emitted a low hum.
Most of the people coming and going were dressed in officer uniforms or tactical equipment, walking hurriedly with expressionless faces.
As Lu Ye followed Yuri forward, he subtly glanced left and right.
He had actually been hoping to see if he could run into Vasily again in the core area today.
His gaze lingered for two seconds in front of a building that had no signboard but was guarded by four armed guards at the entrance.
"What are you looking at? Keep your eyes focused, mercenary."
One of the guards immediately noticed Lu Ye's gaze, placed his right hand on the grip of his submachine gun in front of his chest, and issued a warning.
Seeing this, Yuri quickly pulled Lu Ye aside, shielding him behind him, and nodded to the guard: "Sorry, sir. He just came down from the front lines and was only officially promoted yesterday, so he doesn't quite know the rules yet."
The guard glanced at Lu Ye, removed his hand from his gun, and said nothing more, only nodding slightly.
Clearly, they've seen plenty of newcomers like this who don't know the rules.
