Chapter 14 Everything is slowly getting better
When An Xiaoyue returned to Fu Garden, she made a special detour to Songtao Garden.
Grandpa Fu was practicing calligraphy when he saw her arrive. He smiled and invited her to appreciate his work.
"How is it? Grandpa's calligraphy is vigorous and powerful, isn't it?"
An Xiaoyue looked around the table. "Grandpa, I don't understand calligraphy, but it looks beautiful, like the bonsai on the table. It's unique, growing quietly in the light, with a spirit of breaking through the cracks in the rocks and taking firm root."
Fu Jinyu had heard countless flowery words praising his calligraphy, but this was the first time he had heard such a comment from An Xiaoyue.
But he likes this kind of metaphor, otherwise what's the point of putting this bonsai here?
"That is a kind of proud, solitary, and tenacious spirit that is not afraid of wind and rain."
An Xiaoyue understood. Grandpa Fu wanted to tell her that no matter what, one should always maintain an upward-looking attitude and practice it consistently until the goal is achieved.
"Grandpa, I will raise the child well."
"You little rascal, just read the words, there are no hidden meanings."
An Xiaoyue didn't know whether Grandpa Fu's words were credible or not; she always tended to overthink what others said.
Did you buy any clothes you like today?
"I bought two sets, and paid with Mr. Fu's card."
“Mr. Fu, you’re so unfamiliar with her. She’s married now and her name is Sheng Yang.” After Fu Jinyun finished speaking, he saw that the young girl was only smiling and not saying anything. He sighed, “Youth is so wonderful. Even a form of address can cause such a dilemma. I haven’t had such a dilemma in decades.”
An Xiaoyue sensed a sense of loneliness in Grandpa Fu's words; in this vast Fu Garden, there was no one to talk to.
"Grandpa Fu, may I have lunch with you?"
"That's wonderful!" Grandpa Fu said cheerfully, his face beaming. "Uncle Fu, have Aunt Cui bring the young mistress's lunch to me."
With someone keeping the old man company, Uncle Fu was also happy. "Alright, I'll make the call right away."
An Xiaoyue tried to keep Grandpa Fu company by saying, "Thank you, Grandpa, for asking Aunt to take me shopping for clothes."
“There are no female elders in the family, so I don’t know what you young girls like. It’s just me and Sheng Yang at home, so there’s someone to make clothes for you. Your aunt likes to dress up, so I’ll have her come and take you there.”
"Yes, Auntie has a good eye." She always remembered Fu Shengyang's instructions not to upset her grandfather. "I bought these today, enough for a while. When the baby grows up, I can buy more myself."
The more Fu Jinyun spent with An Xiaoyue, the more he liked her. She spoke softly and acted with great generosity.
"Okay, that's the right way. We've just started living together, so we should talk about everything to get to know each other, right?"
An Xiaoyue nodded, "I understand, Grandpa."
At the dining table, An Xiaoyue and Fu Jinyun each ate their customized meals.
Fu Jinyun is getting old and needs nutritious and easily digestible food.
An Xiaoyue is pregnant and needs a nutritionally complete diet.
In front of An Xiaoyue were six dishes, with meat and vegetables in a balanced ratio, and each dish was a portion for one person.
Fu Jinyun watched as An Xiaoyue ate one dish after another, not like she was eating, but rather like she was completing a task.
"Little Moon."
An Xiaoyue put down her chopsticks and swallowed the food in her mouth. "Grandpa, what's wrong?"
Seeing her polite and well-behaved demeanor, Fu Jinyun waved his hand, "No need to be so formal."
"Grandpa knows that Sheng Yang's actions are extreme. Grandpa will talk to him slowly and say, 'You... have been wronged.'"
An Xiaoyue thought of Fu Shengyang's instructions to her; everything Fu Shengyang did was to make her grandfather happy.
Grandpa's words now are also an explanation for Fu Shengyang.
Their grandfather-granddaughter relationship was very strong, just like the deep mother-daughter relationship she shared with her mother.
"Grandpa, you know everything about Mr. Fu and me. I don't think it can be changed by just persuading you. I'm willing to do anything that's good for the baby."
Having witnessed the love story of Teacher Zhong and Teacher Zhou, An Xiaoyue understands one thing: in marriage, two people without love cannot compromise for each other.
Therefore, she wouldn't let her grandfather say anything to Fu Shengyang.
Once Grandpa opens his mouth, Fu Shengyang will think the worst of her.
At least during the duration of their marriage, she only wanted to live peacefully with Fu Shengyang.
She doesn't want to attend Dr. Zhang's course; she'll discuss it with Fu Shengyang in her own way.
Fu Shengyang is a man of action; he won't agree to her requests just because she talks about them or because her grandfather persuades her.
Upon hearing her answer, Grandpa Fu suddenly smiled, "Boiling a frog in lukewarm water, Grandpa understands. Sheng Yang's personality is best suited for subtle influence."
An Xiaoyue smiled without saying a word, but she wouldn't dare to subtly influence Fu Shengyang.
After lunch, An Xiaoyue packed up the textbooks and materials she needed for the afternoon classes and went to the hospital to accompany her mother.
As soon as she arrived at the hospital, a nurse called out to her, "A family member of An Jiaren."
An Xiaoyue remained polite, saying, "Good afternoon."
"Go to the office, the doctor wants to see you."
This is the first time the doctor has contacted my mother since she was hospitalized. Could it be that my mother's condition is not optimistic?
An Xiaoyue's expression suddenly turned serious. "Okay."
She had only spoken with her mother's attending physician about her mother's condition once or twice, and the conversations were very brief.
During lunch break, the only sound in the doctor's office is the tapping of keyboards.
Today should be her shift, and she's currently writing medical records in front of the computer.
The doctor had piles of medical records on both sides of his hands, and a bunch of test reports that hadn't been entered into the computer screen were also piled up haphazardly in the grid above the screen.
An Xiaoyue knocked lightly on the door and then said, "Doctor, hello, I am An Jiaren's family member. The nurse asked me to come and find you."
The doctor turned around, his tired eyes looking at her. "You're a family member of An Jiaren, right?"
“Yes.” An Xiaoyue walked in, stood behind the doctor, and clenched her fists with worry.
"Here's the thing, after discussions among the attending physicians and department heads, your mother's treatment plan was adjusted yesterday. The medication was changed to a higher-grade one with fewer side effects. The alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) test, which is an indicator of liver cancer, showed results within the normal range."
All the news was good; things were slowly getting better, and An Xiaoyue's heart, which had been in her throat, finally calmed down.
"The biggest problem right now is your mother's esophageal variceal bleeding and ascites. Considering all factors, we've decided to perform a transjugular portosystemic shunt (THS), which is currently the most effective treatment for your mother's condition. The surgery involves..."
The doctor explained the surgery in great detail, and as a medical student, An Xiaoyue knew what it meant.
The surgery was successful, and Mom will be discharged from the hospital soon to recuperate and wait for a suitable liver donor.
Surgery failed...
“But…” the doctor’s voice rang out.
Every illness has an ending, but An Xiaoyue held her breath nervously and habitually picked at the flesh on her thumb.
