Chapter 179 The City Where People Live: Emma Deslinger 4

There were actually two other people standing around Monica and Saya.

However, neither Saya, Monica, nor anyone else in Amadeus can see these two people. They exist between illusion and reality. In layman's terms, they have one foot in a dream, but their subjective thoughts are still in reality.

"What are you doing sneaking around like this?" Elena stared intently at Saya and Monica's conversation. "I thought I could find out something by following them."

Even though Qin didn't tell Elena he was going out, his unusual behavior aroused Elena's suspicion, so she naturally followed him.

But she also knew that no matter how skilled she was at concealing herself, she would be helpless against Qin's bug-like perception. So, the fact that she was being followed was simply because Qin tacitly approved it.

Qin didn't lie to Saya either—he genuinely didn't tell Elena about it. Whether she'll come or not, nobody can say for sure.

"Can't she see us?" Elena was clearly asking a lot of questions.

“They can’t see me unless I want them to,” Qin explained simply.

"What amazing magic! Can I learn it?"

“No, unless you want to do what I did. Demonic magic always comes at a price. The host of that price hasn’t changed, except that this time I’m using the Eye of Achilles instead of the druid as a medium,” Jean said.

Compared to the mastery of dream magic by humans, the dream magic of demons is clearly a case of being outmatched.

Irina had never heard of any magician who could create such a realistic virtual dream world.

Wait...didn't I encounter a highly skilled dream magic practitioner before...? Where was it again...?

A brief moment of doubt flashed by, and then that thought vanished as if it had never been considered before, subconsciously ignoring that slight sense of unease.

This magic is a derivative version of the "memory reading" magic that Fran used on Jean; although the original intention of this magic was not to read memories, but a series of profound magics involving time and so on, the process would force the person to obtain their memories.

This is a complete superior alternative to that kind of magic, and the caster is not involved and is not affected by the emotions of the host.

There is reason to suspect that the Dream Witch's creation of the memory-reading magic was based on this blueprint of demonic magic. However, demonic magic consumes lifespan, and in order to convert its cost into magical power, significant modifications had to be made.

This naturally reduced the effectiveness of the magic—but even so, it was still an innovation.

“So much has happened to Saya…” Elena murmured. “No, does this count as an invasion of privacy?”

"Why didn't you regret invading my privacy back then?"

"You're quite vengeful..." Elena clicked her tongue. "By the way, doesn't Saya realize this is a dream?"

"Do you often realize you're dreaming when you're dreaming?" Qin's question left Elena speechless.

Most of the time, most people cannot have lucid dreams unless there are unexpected circumstances. Even if a person in a dream occasionally doubts that they are dreaming, they will quickly ignore the fact that they are dreaming.

……

“Monica…why…you have such excellent grades, completely…” Saya didn’t understand.

Monica had outstanding grades, and theoretically, Saya believed she couldn't even compare to her as a witch. If only she hadn't lacked passion for magic and never bothered to put it into practice…

She was already a witch long ago.

Even so, she could live well anywhere. There's absolutely no need for her to return to the city where this person lives to "save" the world.

She has no obligation.

Moreover, she would be subject to criticism from others. Virtually no one would understand her; death was the inevitable end she had to reach.

“It seems someone is coming soon, Saya…make your move…otherwise, you’ll be punished along with me.” Monica chuckled, raising her wand. “Let me see just how much more advanced a witch’s magic is than mine.”

Someone is coming.

If someone with ulterior motives were to witness this scene, and Saya were found to be so intimate with the murderer, Saya would, at the very least, be executed.

Even if she survives by chance because of her witch identity, her reputation will be greatly damaged once she goes to the Magic Integration Association, which would be a fatal blow to her future.

“If there were an optimal solution for everything, the world would be too wonderful,” Monica said. “I just chose what I thought was the optimal solution.”

Countless magical light curtains erupted from Monica's wand.

Even though she had never properly practiced magic, this merciless beam of light was basically enough to annihilate any ordinary person who didn't know magic.

"Monica, no. I won't fight you anymore."

The last time, the very last time, Saya fought and captured Monica in the same way—Monica never told her why she killed someone, and she had to capture her out of a sense of justice.

She simply couldn't understand how her best friend, with whom she used to share everything, had become a ruthless killer.

If someone hadn't told her later the real reason Monica committed the murders—the dark truths hidden by the kingdom's higher-ups—she wouldn't have been able to have done so.

She might truly be kept in the dark her whole life, genuinely believing that her former friend has turned into a vicious murderer who kills anyone she sees.

Monica ended the suffering of many in the kingdom with her own life, and also brought Saya a "merit" that she would regret for the rest of her life.

“Perhaps you really do come from the future,” Monica said. “Now I believe it. But—what’s destined cannot be changed. A serial killer like me doesn’t need you to try and stop me.”

"Monica..."

“Or, I’ve guessed another possibility,” Monica said. “Saya, it’s time for you to wake up.”

"wake up?"

“I don’t know why we’ve met here, but you’re not the Saya I’ve been waiting for,” Monica said. “But I can tell you this anyway—whatever happens to me, I don’t need you to save me. It has nothing to do with you. It’s all my own choice.”

“So, you should wake up.” Monica could deal with Saya, who didn’t resist with magic, in an instant. Under the light of magic, killing someone was too easy. “In any case, I’m very fortunate to have met such a pure friend like you during the darkest period of my life. It’s a pity that the friends you’ve met aren’t so pure.”
