Chapter 352 - 350: The Grand Finale
Chapter 352 - 350: The Grand Finale
Director Zhang took off his reading glasses and carefully wiped the lenses with a soft cloth.
"However, this time it’s not twins. From the fetal heartbeat and pulse, it’s a very healthy single child."
Gu Yanshen’s back, which was as tight as an iron plate, visibly relaxed. His tall body leaned against the back of the chair, and he let out a long breath, with a layer of fine sweat on his forehead.
"One is good." He tightly held Lin Wan Yi’s hand, his voice hoarse, "Last time, giving birth to An An and Ning Ning, you suffered too much. I would rather not have children than let you go through the gates of hell again."
Lin Wan Yi held his hand back, her fingertips gently stroking the calluses in his palm, and lightly leaned on his shoulder.
Gu Yanshen took out his military notebook and pulled out a pen, looking ready to take notes on important military matters: "Director Zhang, what should my wife pay attention to during this time?"
Director Zhang looked at the "living Yama" who was now turned into a nervous new father, and couldn’t help but laugh: "Technician Lin is in excellent physical condition, and the deficiencies from giving birth to twins have been perfectly replenished. Just a normal diet and routine will do, no need to be too nervous. You two can just calmly prepare to welcome this new life."
Five years later. October 1983, golden autumn.
At the entrance of Hongxing Village in the suburbs, a huge stone monument now stands, with the words "National Agricultural Science and Technology Demonstration Base" engraved on it.
The endless golden waves of wheat rolled in the autumn wind, with heavy ears of wheat bending the stalks. Several brand new domestic combine harvesters roared and worked in the fields, swallowing the ears of wheat and spitting out golden grains.
Lin Wan Yi stood on the field ridge, holding a foreign fax in her hand.
She wore a simple white shirt and khaki pants, with no traces of time left on her face. The highest grade spiritual spring water not only made her skin fair and translucent but also gave her a calm and graceful demeanor.
"Wanyi!" Dean Li, now the chief advisor of the Ministry of Agriculture, came over quickly, waving a red-headed document in his hand, "Mr. Smith just called long-distance from abroad! The international agricultural organization has officially listed the ’Wanyi Model’ as the standard textbook for global saline-alkali land management! You have to go abroad to receive the award!"
Lin Wan Yi handed the fax to Dean Li: "I just got the notice. However, let the ministry send a representative for the award. The 30,000 mu of anti-desertification shelter forest test fields in Northwest are going to be sown next week, I need to oversee it personally."
"You just can’t stay idle. The foreign exchange you’ve earned for the country in these years and the advanced equipment you’ve bought back could fill several warehouses." Dean Li looked at the bountiful land before him and said with great emotion, "Five years ago, who could have imagined that this piece of saline-alkali land, where not even grass could grow, would now become the nation’s highest-yielding granary?"
Lin Wan Yi smiled and gazed into the distance.
In five years, her Spiritual Spring Space had advanced to the highest level. Not only had it expanded to the size of a football field, but the spiritual spring water had unlocked complete healing properties. The old battlefield wounds Father Gu sustained were completely healed with medicinal wine mixed with spiritual spring water, and now he could still perform military exercises twice a day in the military compound; Gu An and Gu Ning, and later born Sanbao Gu Chen, grew up drinking spiritual spring water, becoming exceptionally intelligent and free from ailments.
At five in the afternoon, in the military compound.
A brand new jeep was parked outside the Gu Family Courtyard.
Jiang Zhou, dressed in a neatly tailored suit, opened the car door and carried a large cardboard box from the trunk. He was now the youngest professor at Beijing City University of Technology and the chief engineer of a national key electronic project.
"Sister Lin! Brother Gu!" Jiang Zhou carried the box into the courtyard, sweating all over, "The first batch of twenty-inch color TVs off the line, I’m personally delivering one to you!"
In the courtyard, five-and-a-half-year-old Gu An was sitting cross-legged on the grass, holding a screwdriver, skillfully dismantling an old radio. Hearing the commotion, he looked up, his eyes shining: "Uncle Jiang, is this made with the new type of color picture tube you mentioned last time?"
"Yes! Thanks to your suggestion for the high voltage package cooling circuit," Jiang Zhou patted Gu An on the head, full of admiration. This five-and-a-half-year-old child was a prodigy in mechanics and electronics. In time, he would undoubtedly be a pillar of the nation.
Four-year-old Sanbao Gu Chen was playing on the grass, hugging Little Grey’s neck. Little Grey was now the undisputed "Dog King" in the compound, larger in size than five years ago, and its fur was sleek and shiny. It lazily yawned, allowing its little master to knead its ears into various shapes. Surrounded by several nearly grown wolfdogs, all its offspring, they were treated like treasures by Director Li of the security section.
Jiang Zhou moved the TV into the living room, plugged it in, and extended the antenna.
The screen flickered a few times, displaying a clear color picture.
The TV was airing a legal investigative program, reporting on the reform situation of a large Northwest labor camp.
The camera swept over a barren quarry. Several prisoners in gray uniforms were laboriously carrying stones.
One woman caught attention. Her hair was dry and yellow, like a tangled mass, her face lined with deep grooves from wind and sun. Her hands were rough like old tree bark. Carrying a large stone on her back, she stumbled and fell heavily into a pile of gravel, struggling for a while to get up.
That was Bai Tingting.
Five years ago, she was sentenced to twenty years in prison for stealing state secrets, sabotaging key agricultural projects, and being found an accomplice in Vice Director Zhou’s scheme to sell state assets. In the camp’s hard labor and day-to-day jealousy, she aged like a sixty-year-old woman.
In the footage, a prison guard walked over, scolding harshly. Bai Tingting struggled to get up, muddy tears carving out two tracks on her dusty face. Gazing into the distance, one wonders if she regrets entangling with those she shouldn’t have.
As for Vice Director Zhou and the fraudulent fertilizer seller Expert Wang, they were given life sentences, destined to rot in prison. And Aunt Wang, once domineering in the security section, was forcibly sent back to her rural hometown for repeatedly spreading rumors and causing trouble, facing villagers’ pointing fingers daily.
Lin Wan Yi brought out two cups of tea from the kitchen, glancing at the screen before turning away.
You reap what you sow. Those who try to ruin others with vile means ultimately bury themselves in their own greed.
Steady footsteps were heard outside the courtyard gate.
Gu Yanshen pushed open the iron gate and walked in. He wore a neatly pressed officer’s uniform, the golden star on his shoulder reflecting dazzling light in the setting sun. In his thirties, he had shed his earlier coldness, settling into a more reserved and dignified demeanor.
"Daddy!" Gu Ning, in a pink dress, fluttered like a little butterfly into Gu Yanshen’s arms.
Gu Yanshen lifted his daughter with one arm, his stern face immediately softening. With his other hand, he handed an oil-paper package to Lin Wan Yi.
"I happened to pass by the Old East Gate and bought your favorite sugar-fried chestnuts," he said gently.
Seeing this, Jiang Zhou, perceptive, stood up: "Sister Lin, Brother Gu, I’ve set up the TV, and I have data to measure in the lab, so I’ll head back first."
After seeing Jiang Zhou off, the courtyard quieted down.
The autumn sunset cast a golden edge over the small courtyard. Gu An continued to tinker with his parts, Sanbao Gu Chen rode on Little Grey’s back, shouting ’giddy-up,’ and Gu Ning peeled a chestnut, stuffing it into Gu Yanshen’s mouth.
Lin Wan Yi sat on the rattan chair, holding the warm chestnuts, looking at everything before her.
From time-traveling to this materially scarce 1970s world, from the absurd start of sleeping with the wrong blind date, to now having a successful career and a happy family, she had left her mark on this era with her intelligence and space.
Gu Yanshen walked to her side, pulled over another chair, and sat down.
He habitually held her hand, wrapping her slightly cool fingertips in his large, warm palm.
"For the Northwest test fields, I’ll go with you," Gu Yanshen said.
Lin Wan Yi turned her head to look at him: "You’ve just been promoted to general, with so much to do at the military district, can you leave?"
"I’ve already been granted a half-month leave," Gu Yanshen looked into her eyes, seriously saying, "For the past five years, you’ve traveled the world for the project, and I owe you too much companionship. From now on, no matter where you go, I’ll walk with you."
A gentle breeze rustled through the ivy on the courtyard wall, creating a soft sound.
Lin Wan Yi held his hand back, interlocking their fingers tightly.
"Alright." She replied softly.
The sunset’s afterglow stretched their shadows long, finally intertwining amidst the courtyard’s joyful laughter.
