Chapter 380: Are You Blind?
Chapter 380: Are You Blind?
Nathaniel Nathan said coldly, "Normally, I could just put a bullet in a piece of scum like you. But I’m in a good mood today, so I’ll let you live and see what real justice looks like."
Vera Xavier’s mouth twitched. ’How is this a good mood? It’s obvious he’s absolutely furious. But he looks so handsome when he’s fighting!’
’Eeee, I love it!’
Just as Vera Xavier thought, Nathaniel Nathan was in a terrible mood. He had poured his heart and soul into uprooting the drug trafficking ring, only to turn around and find his woman accused of being part of it. This was simply intolerable!
Never mind that the person Chief Lewis had framed was Vera Xavier; even if it had been an ordinary citizen, Nathaniel would never have let it slide. Scum like this was a cancer on society!
Word of a major government crackdown had been spreading since the start of the year. Since this situation had fallen into his lap, he might as well contribute his own small part to the effort.
The words had barely left his lips when police sirens wailed outside.
Leo Wright’s expression shifted, but Chief Lewis said smugly, "My backup is here. You’re not escaping the long arm of the law today!"
A police car pulled up, and the City Police Chief got out and walked straight inside.
Although Chief Lewis was self-appointed, the city headquarters had always turned a blind eye. They were locals who usually didn’t do anything too outrageous. With the intense anti-drug operations on the border, their ability to maintain local order was a net positive.
So when the City Police Chief heard what was happening, he was scared half to death. ’That bastard Chief Lewis! He has some nerve, pulling a stunt like this!’
Chief Lewis had seen the City Police Chief from afar once before, and he was puzzled. ’This isn’t that big of a deal, so why would it warrant the City Police Chief’s personal attention?’
But he had a guilty conscience, so when he saw the City Police Chief enter, he scrambled to greet him. "Chief! We acted on a public tip regarding drug trafficking. We’ve identified the suspects—it’s them. Not only did they just resist arrest, but they also openly assaulted law enforcement officers!"
He shot Nathaniel Nathan a look full of disdain. ’You dare hit me? We’ll see who takes care of whom this time!’
He expected the City Police Chief to order his men to arrest Nathaniel Nathan and Vera Xavier. Instead, the chief shot him a cold glance and said to the officers behind him, "Arrest all of this scum for impersonating police. I’ll interrogate them myself!"
The officers behind him immediately moved forward and handcuffed Chief Lewis and all the men he had brought with him.
Chief Lewis was dumbfounded. "Chief, you’ve arrested the wrong people!" he sputtered. "They’re the drug traffickers!"
The City Police Chief slapped him across the face. "The distinguished captain of the Central Narcotics Division is a drug trafficker? Are you blind?!"
Nathaniel Nathan had needed a cover for this mission, and his cover was Captain of the Central Narcotics Division.
Chief Lewis froze, staring at Nathaniel Nathan in utter disbelief. His bravado vanished in an instant. His back was soaked through with a cold sweat, and beads of perspiration dotted his forehead.
He couldn’t help but glance at Susan Caldwell, only to see a look of horror on her face as well. A wave of regret washed over him. ’Why did I get involved in this? I thought I was currying favor with some big shot from Veridia, but I ended up offending someone infinitely more powerful!’
