Chapter 22 The Clever Fiancée
Chapter 22 The Clever Fiancée
The next morning.
Next door to 76 White Street, in the second-floor bedroom of Diana's villa, Chen Wenbin opened his eyes. The iris-patterned wallpaper on the ceiling and the faint scent of perfume in his nose clearly told him that this was not his room.
Turning his head, he saw Diana fast asleep beside him, her dark blonde hair disheveled over her chest, her legs tightly wrapped around his right leg...
"...Darling, you're awake!" Diana was startled awake and noticed the man beside her. Then, as if she had thought of something, her eyes gradually became hazy, and she couldn't help but reach out and stroke Chen Wenbin's firm muscles.
Chen Wenbin glanced at the sunlight streaming through the curtains, reached out to stop her from doing anything further, and chuckled, "Diane, we should get up, and you need time to recover..."
His reminder made the blonde girl feel uncomfortable, so she could only nod obediently with a regretful expression.
"...Alright! My dear Dr. Robin! I'll go find Betty and prepare breakfast right away..."
"I'll go!" Chen Wenbin shook his head, sat up, put on his shirt, then leaned down and kissed her forehead before leaving the bedroom.
After he left, Diana closed her eyes. Feeling the warmth and scent of the man still lingering in the bed, she murmured to herself:
"I hope I didn't make the wrong bet..."
On the other side, Chen Wenbin came down the stairs to the first floor, where he saw the little maid Betty sitting idly in the living room, lost in thought. When she saw Chen Wenbin come down wearing only a shirt, her cheeks immediately flushed red, and she quickly lifted her skirt and curtsied.
"Lord Robin! You're awake!"
The word "Master" she used actually meant "master." After Chen Wenbin and Diana officially established their relationship yesterday, Betty, Diana's personal maid, naturally had to call Chen Wenbin "Master."
"Just call me 'sir' as before!" Chen Wenbin waved his hand and instructed, "Is breakfast ready?"
"It's all ready!" Betty nodded vigorously, then added, "Mary came to help before dawn. She said she knows your tastes, so she made you beef stew with potatoes and Oriental bread..."
"That's a steamed bun!"
Chen Wenbin thought for a moment, then said to Betty, "Go next door and see if Mary and David have had breakfast yet. If not, come over and eat with them! I have something to tell them!"
"Yes, sir!"
A dozen minutes later, Diana, dressed simply, arrived at the first-floor restaurant and sat in the hostess's seat at the table, while Chen Wenbin naturally took the seat of honor.
At Chen Wenbin's request, Betty, David and Benjamin (both sailors on the Jenna), the two apprentices at the pharmacy, and Mary, who was in charge of the pharmacy's accounts and Chen Wenbin's personal finances, all sat at the dining table.
"...I called you all here to formally introduce my fiancée, Diana!"
Chen Wenbin glanced at the four men who looked rather reserved, and said in a calm tone, "When I'm not around, she can make important decisions for me, including the allocation of assets and the appointment of personnel!"
I hope you will make this clear to everyone else, understand?
"Yes, sir!"
"Sir! I will definitely tell Andrew and the others about this!"
David and Benjamin exchanged a glance and immediately spoke, while Mary pursed her lips and then nodded in agreement, saying, "I understand, sir!"
After all three had expressed their opinions, Diana's gaze lingered on Mary's face for two seconds before she smiled and said, "...I know you all knew Robin before I did, especially David and Benjamin!"
She looked at the two young people, who were around twenty years old, and said in a gentle tone, "You and Robin spent two months together on the Jenna and developed a deep bond. Robin considers you his most trustworthy friends and partners, and you are his best students and assistants!"
And then there's Andrew, who worked with Robin to build the Jenna Spinning Machine and is now the manager of the spinning machine factory.
Chris and Anthony were helping Robin manage the farm outside the city and training the security team to protect the textile mill…
At this point, her tone became serious, and her gaze swept over the three of them again.
"...So I have to say! I'm not here to ruin your relationship with Robin or to enjoy the fruits of your labor!"
On the contrary, I hope to help Robin and take Robin's and everyone's cause to greater heights!
As you all know, my fiancé is an extraordinary man, a man worth following, because he always manages to create miracles!
A month ago, my life was like a candle in the wind, and he saved me from death, just as he saved you from death!
We all owe him so much, yet he always gives us even more... So, I hope you can spend your whole lives loyal to this man and to this trust, because he deserves it!
I, Diana Spencer, will never break this vow!
After saying that, she winked at Chen Wenbin, who was somewhat stunned, and asked, "Darling, are you willing to accept our allegiance?"
Seeing the four men who immediately stood up to show their loyalty, what could Chen Wenbin say? He could only nod to them and make a promise of "never abandoning them" and "providing them with meat and soup."
Even without Diana's words, Chen Wenbin wouldn't doubt David and the others' loyalty to him, because everything they had now—respectable jobs and social status, increasing power, company stock options and dividends, a brighter future, etc.—all came from Boss Chen. Under normal circumstances, they would never betray him.
As for exceptional circumstances, Chen Wenbin's rise has been too rapid, and yesterday he tied almost all the powerful figures in the Rhode Island colony to the chariot of interests, so there's no need to consider it in the short term.
As for why Diana did this, Chen Wenbin, with his clear mind, naturally guessed the reason... This was actually the main reason why Chen Wenbin decided to accept Diana; she was indeed a very rare and truly intelligent woman.
After breakfast.
Diana needed to return to City Hall to see Governor Hopkins and tell him what had happened last night. Before getting into the carriage, she straightened Chen Wenbin's collar and said gently, "Darling, you should feel safe now, right?"
Chen Wenbin said helplessly, "You know, Diane, what really makes me feel insecure isn't David and the others..."
"I see."
Diana nodded gently. "So I'll go to England with you... I'll always be on your side! Always!"
"It's so kind of you!"
No man could resist such a declaration of love. He lowered his head and kissed her cheeks and forehead a few times, then stroked her shoulder and said seriously, "Diane, we must have many children in the future, because I will have a lot of wealth that my children will need to inherit..."
